The United Nations (UN) is observing the first ever World Food Safety Day on June 7, 2019, after it was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 2018. What is food safety?
Food safety is the handling, preparing and storing food in a way to best reduce the risk of individuals becoming sick from foodborne illnesses. Food-borne illnesses are usually caused by the presence substances such as micro-organisms, pesticide residue, or antibiotics in food. By observing the World Food Safety Day, the UN aims to tackle these risks in order to reduce the cases of food-borne diseases. Why is food safety important?
Around 600 million cases of food-borne diseases are reported around the world every year. It means almost 1 in 10 people in the world fall ill after eating contaminated food. It affects the socioeconomic development of countries by burdening their health care systems and straining national economies, tourism industry and trade. Children below the age of five are the worst affected, with 125000 child deaths caused by food-borne diseases every year. All these factors highlight the importance of food safety in ensuring the progress of humanity. How can you contribute?
As an individual, you can contribute towards this initiative of the United Nations by maintaining food hygiene. Here are a few tips to maintain food hygiene:· Wash hands regularly
. Sanitize kitchen utensils, equipment and surfaces
· Always keep raw and cooked food separately. It prevents micro-organisms from the raw food spreading to the cooked food.
